A Double Life was my first story written with a serious intent to publish. The story concerns someone with the problem the exact opposite of Multiple Personality Disorder. His mind switches from one body in America to another in Russia. It is a Russia that has gone back to totalitarian rule, and he as a youth must keep quiet about both his condition and what he has seen in America, or else. Unfortunetly, the authorities eventually find out he's less than a loyal citizen, and take action.
I wrote A Double Life in 1989, a time when reform in the Soviet Union was in doubt. When the Communist government fell, I simply changed the name from Soviet Union to Russia. To those who may accuse me of "Russia-bashing," this is not a story about countries, but one man versus a totalitarian system, one who fights back how he can.
